Kaohsiung’s National Land Greening and Climate Adaptation Campaign
Today I finished catching up with my daily writing entries, also preparing for meeting with Jennifer to talk about the environmental livestream we watched on July 6th about planting more trees in Kaohsiung, discussing the trash in the Indo-Pacific, and talking more about what we found in the pet exhibition.
For the livestream we watched on the 6th, we were to write a loose report summarizing what they talked about. Apparently it was about the National Land Greening and Climate Adaptation, a governmental initiative to plant more trees across the nation, especially in Kaohsiung, to combat rising urban temperatures. They modeled a lot of their ideas after policies and practices from the European Union and Singapore, where they reward their municipalities for implementing green indicators such as urban greening.
Targeting specifically the urban heat island effect, the speakers address the shade effect, wanting more trees to create “shaded/vampire routes” that people can safely walk outside of the sun on their commute. They also talked about wood resource recycling, where one person asked the government to utilize fallen or cut down trees as biofuel instead of just burning them. One suggestion that surprised me was the government being okay with planting non-native species of trees, as back home there are a lot of people who are very against invasive species.
