華人民主書院協會
我們和蕭先生一起去了新民主學院（NSD），這是一個致力於推廣民主價值和人權的非營利組織。該機構最初設在香港，但在2019年香港暴亂和國安法實施後關閉。台灣分部仍然存在，目前正致力於透過工作坊和藝術展覽等方式，鼓勵選民參與地方選舉並提高公眾意識。
我們互相做了自我介紹，之後他們繼續談到了吳醫師的案例。吳博士在天安門事件發生時是教授。之後，他畢生致力於調查這場悲劇，並居住在美國。如今，隨著年齡的增長，他來到蕭先生這裡，希望能夠移居台灣並成為台灣公民，在台灣安度晚年。對於外國人來說，獲得台灣公民身份非常困難，但如果吳博士被認定為對台灣/中華民國做出特殊貢獻的無國籍人士，他或許能夠獲得公民身份。
其餘時間，我們向成員們詢問了其他國際問題，例如台灣移民問題、中國與其他國家的關係以及「一個中國」原則如何利用其經濟影響力對夥伴國施加影響，以及中美貿易戰。
New School for Democracy (NSD)
With Mr. Hsiao, we went to the New School for Democracy (NSD), a non-profit dedicated to promoting democratic values and human rights. The original branch was in Hong Kong, but after the 2019 Hong Kong riots and the National Security Law it was shut down. The Taiwanese branch still exists, and they are currently working on engaging voters in local elections and spreading public awareness through workshops and art shows.
We had introductions with each other, and they later continued to talk about the case of Dr. Wu, who was a professor at the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Afterwards, he spent his entire life investigating the tragedy and lived in the United States. As he has now gotten older, he came to Mr. Hsiao in order to move and become a Taiwan citizen in order to spend the rest of his twilight years here. Getting Taiwanese citizenship is very difficult for foreign nationals, but if recognized as a stateless person who has made special contributions to Taiwan/ROC, Dr. Wu might be able to get it.
We spent the rest of the time asking the members questions about other international issues such as Taiwanese immigration, China’s diplomatic relations with other countries and the “One China” principle using their economic leverage over their partners, and the US-China trade war.
