Taiwan's Immigrant Population

Date: 24/6/25

Author: Avery Adams

After coming to Taiwan, I met a lot of people from other countries, some tourists and some immigrants. In the process of talking to immigrants, I experienced and learned many things that I didn't expect.

For example, I have met some people from Western countries, most of whom found jobs through the Internet, and then moved to Taiwan, and usually work in an office. Many of the people I have talked to during my time here said that they feel that living in Taiwan has been better than in their home country.

I also encountered another group of immigrants, mainly from Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Vietnam or the Philippines. Most of them are in the service industry in Taiwan, or they have opened their own stores and started their own businesses. Although some people may think that this kind of work is less professional, most of these immigrants did not have the same resources as Western immigrants before they came to Taiwan, so it has actually been more difficult for them to adapt to and start life here.

It was because of these experiences that I began to learn about the immigration situation in Taiwan.

From my research I found that 1 in 33 people in Taiwan is an immigrant, and the city where the most immigrants live is Taoyuan, followed by Taichung and New Taipei. Overall, more and more people are coming to Taiwan every year.

Why did they choose to come to Taiwan? There are three major reasons people say: the convenience of life, the comfort of the environment, and the safety. These are attractive qualities for both Western and Southeast Asian immigrants. However, the problems they encountered were not the same.

Western immigrants mainly encountered problems due to linguistic and cultural differences, but most of them have been mentally prepared for these problems though the problem of course persist. But for people from Southeast Asia, the real challenge is job stability and living expenses. They often must start from scratch, and the high cost of coming to Taiwan makes life even more stressful.

Although many Taiwanese agree that migrant workers are important and needed, migrants often face many difficulties. In contrast, people from Taiwan are of course less likely to encounter so many obstacles to doing the same work.

I think it's a bit like the United States. There are also two types of immigrants in the United States, one is people with better conditions and a comfortable life. The other immigrated to make life better for themselves and their families. Some Americans will want to get rid of the latter because they have long considered these people to be low-skilled laborers, and their perception of them has not changed.

Although the backgrounds of Taiwan and the United States are different, there are some similarities between the two places when it comes to immigration. It was something that I found interesting and wanted to look more into!
