Interning at the Legislative BuildingAlex's Second Week Interning
This week I began by attending an award ceremony held at Taiwan’s Legislative building. The Ceremony recognized five Taiwanese congressional members for their work involving the protection of animal rights. Attending this ceremony was truly an honor and I was able to learn more about the kinds of work people had done in order to preserve animal rights. I was in charge of delivering the awards during the ceremony and taking pictures. After the ceremony had ended a few of us got lunch and discussed how the ceremony had gone over.
After lunch I returned to the office to work on a translation video introducing our NGO, TCPA. This task tested my Chinese translation abilities as there are not always perfect translations for every idea. In the future I may need to do translation work for the NGO or another job so this was certainly good practice to have done!
During a few of my breaks at the office I discussed Taiwanese Culture and politics. One thing I found particularly interesting was Taiwan’s legislative system. I learned that when selecting legislative members, Taiwanese citizens vote twice, one for their selected candidate and one for their selected party. Apparently, this second selection helps aid smaller parties become represented within the congressional body. Overall these were all valuable experiences for learning more about the inner functions of Taiwanese democracy.
